The Chosen returns to Prime Video with series five
Report by Duncan Williams for Sorted magazine
The global hit drama The Chosen is set to return for its fifth series, with a premiere date of 13 July on Amazon Prime Video. The highly anticipated new episodes will continue the story of Jesus Christ, focusing on the events leading up to the crucifixion.
Series five will depict the period from Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem to the Last Supper, offering a detailed and character-driven portrayal of the days that precede the Passion.
The eight-episode season will be released in stages: the first two episodes on 13 July, followed by three more on 20 July, and the final three on 27 July.
Jonathan Roumie returns in the role of Jesus, a performance that has drawn praise from audiences around the world.
Roumie, a committed Christian and active member of the Catholic Church, is known not only for his work on The Chosen but also for his role as Lonnie Frisbee in the 2023 film Jesus Revolution. He has used his own stardom and acting success to speak on matters of faith and is involved with Catholics in Media Associates. In 2023, he addressed the March for Life rally in the United States, stating, “God is love, and true love gives way to life, not death.”
Since its debut in 2019, The Chosen has become a phenomenon among faith-based audiences as well as secular ones. Its first series was financed entirely through crowdfunding, making it one of the most successful viewer-supported projects in television history. The show’s thoughtful pacing, rich character development, and historical detail have set it apart from other biblical dramas.
In June, cast members attended a special screening at the Vatican, where they were greeted by Pope Leo XIV in recognition of the show’s global cultural and spiritual impact.
Unlike many adaptations of the life of Christ, The Chosen takes a more contemplative approach.
Series one introduced viewers to Jesus’ early ministry and his first followers. Now, with series five, the focus shifts to the final week before his crucifixion.
The events of the crucifixion itself are expected to be portrayed in the forthcoming sixth series.
